For over twenty years, researchers at universities and institutions worldwide have been studying how to build a wellbeing-driven society — with important advances in ethics, wellbeing science, AI and digital technologies, wellbeing economics, and governance. What was missing was a way to integrate them. Research led by Dr. Judah Thornewill at the University of Louisville School of Public Health and Information Sciences, with National Science Foundation support (2003–2023), and in a private-sector organization he formed to translate the findings into practice (2023–2026), achieved that integration — addressing how to measure wellbeing, how to fund it, how to govern it, how to build technology that protects privacy and sovereignty, and how to ensure that participants govern the platforms they use. The result: a new model — the AI-Powered Wellbeing Society.

Why Now.

Lifelong Wellbeing Score (LEWs) — the world’s first universal measure of human wellbeing.
Lifetime Expected Wellbeing Units (LEWs) combine three things every person cares about: how long you live, how happy you are, and how secure your future is — into a single number.
CRA = Catastrophic Risk Adjustment — climate, war, pandemics, AI misalignment, and other catastrophic risks that threaten wellbeing globally.
A Wellbeing Unit (WELLBY) is one unit of wellbeing for one year, measured on a 0–10 scale.

Where the Leverage Is
Because LEWs measures lifelong expected wellbeing, interventions in younger populations produce disproportionately more LEWs per dollar invested. A one-point improvement in wellbeing for a 15-year-old generates roughly four times the LEWs of the same improvement for a 60-year-old — simply because there are more years ahead for that improvement to compound.
This is not sentiment. It is mathematics. And it makes the current data on young people especially urgent:
Mental health crisis — depression and anxiety among adolescents have increased by roughly 50% since 2012, with girls disproportionately affected. In the US, 42% of high school students reported persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness in 2021.
Child mortality — globally, nearly 5 million children under five died in 2022. Progress on reducing child mortality has slowed since 2015 and in some regions reversed.
Economic displacement — as AI transforms industries, young people entering the workforce face a labor market where traditional entry-level positions are disappearing faster than new ones are being created. Without new models for meaningful work, an entire generation faces constrained economic potential.
